Carpet Recycling UK urges retailers to recycle carpet waste

Carpet Recycling UK will be offering recycling advice and encouraging more retailers to start carpet takeback schemes at the 2018 Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show on 15-16 May.

Laurance Bird, CRUK Director said: “Clean installation waste takeback schemes, alongside the growth in facilities processing carpet waste for new uses, offer many business advantages for retailers. Visitors to our stand can learn how these schemes contribute to reduced disposal costs for retailers and help them to promote sustainability initiatives to their customers.”

The industry-backed association for recycling and reusing waste carpet assists retailers with setting up takeback schemes that offer economic and environmental benefits in diverting carpet waste from landfill.

Director Stewart Cullingford of Cullingford Carpets and Interiors can testify to CRUK’s help, having recycled more than 220 tonnes of carpet and underlay since becoming a member in July 2015 and installing a baler. He commented: “Our takeback scheme enables us to achieve the aims of our environmental policy to increase the amount we recycle. It also sets us apart from other carpet retailers in the area.”

CRUK member The Carpet Bureau provides an efficient recycling service for several retailers in SW London. Material is consolidated on site, baled and transported in full lorry loads for use as an alternative fuel for cement kilns. Director Bryan Robison says their service ‘benefits everyone, especially smaller companies’.
