Jo Ruxton, a passionate campaigner for the health of our oceans, award-winning filmmaker, plastic campaigner and Daily Telegraph Pioneer of the Year was invited by Milliken and Humanscale to deliver a keynote speech: ‘Plastic Through the Camera Lens’ at an awareness raising event in Birmingham at the end of last year.
The director of the Netflix documentary, A Plastic Ocean and CEO of the charity Plastic Oceans UK gave an impassioned and insightful presentation on the urgent need to cut back on plastic use. Not only because of how it is affecting marine life, but also because the food chain leads directly to human consumption. Jo shared her experiences and the global call to action required from governments, commerce and consumers to limit further damage to our oceans and wildlife.
A Plastic Ocean has been described by Sir David Attenborough as "one of the most important films of our time" and has gone on to win 14 awards at film festivals across the globe.
Kate Collier, Milliken’s Marketing Communications Manager, also gave a talk at the event about the company’s commitment to sustainability. Kate commented: “We were so proud to have Jo Ruxton give the keynote speech at our event in Birmingham. With over 100 years of environmental stewardship, the Milliken family of companies is one of the world’s most responsible manufacturers.
"Milliken’s philosophy is to do good and the company is consistently finding new ways to reduce resource use. The message that Jo brings is very empowering and reminds us all that from a company or personal perspective we can all contribute to positive change.”
